What is New with the WordPress Update 4.9.8?The WordPress developer community works tirelessly to ensure that users get an optimum performance out of the deployed resources. WordPress users find an update knocking at their doorstep once every few months which either improves performance, fixes bugs, improves security, or adds new features to WordPress. While it is recommended to update WordPress as soon as the new version is released, many users don’t assign high priority to these updates when their sites are working fine. Before we talk about the latest update – Version 4.9.8, we would like to emphasize the importance of prioritizing WordPress updates.

WordPress 4.9.8

In August 2018, WordPress released a maintenance update – WordPress Version 4.9.8. This release includes around 46 bug fixes and enhancements. The highlight of this update is the ‘Try Gutenberg’ callout. Let’s look at the details:

Try Gutenberg Callout

This update contains a callout urging users to try the features of the Gutenberg editor by installing the plugin. While the Gutenberg is scheduled to be enabled by default in the next major WordPress release, users can check if their content and existing plugins work fine with the new block editor. The callout also gives users an option of installing the Classic Editor Plugin which allows them to continue using the current editor.

This callout will be visible only to these set of users:

  • Gutenberg IS NOT installed or activated: Callout will be visible to users have the capability to install plugins on the site.
  • Gutenberg IS installed and then activated: It will be visible to all users who have the capability to edit posts.
  • Classic Editor Plugin is installed and then activated: The callout will not be visible.

You can dismiss the callout and it won’t reappear. You can access it through your dashboard by clicking on Screen Options and checking the New Editor option.

Bug fixes and enhancements

The earlier version 4.9.6 had added some new tools for personal data. This version includes some privacy fixes to make those tools consistent and flexible. These fixes include:

  • Privacy confirmation emails:
  • The subject line will contain the type of request being confirmed.
  • In multisite, the site name will be used in privacy emails
  • Users can adjust pagination for privacy request admin screens.

In the previous versions, the meta keys registration function only allowed the registration metadata for an entire object type like posts, users, comments, etc. In this version, metadata can also be registered for object sub-types like a specific post or taxonomy.
